The first wave of more than 200 incoming Mississippi College freshmen arrives soon for a blitz of summer orientation activities.

The initial June 1-2 sessions will get students prepared to transition from high school to life on the Clinton campus. Orientation is designed to get MC newcomers ready for fall classes starting in late August. They will make plenty of new friends along the way.

The freshmen will travel from 15 states stretching from the Southeast to as far away as California, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Illinois and Iowa.

Events begin with check-in at the Nelson Hall lobby from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on June 1.

MC leaders will toss out the welcome mat in Blue & Gold country. “Being MC” is the theme of the upcoming orientations for freshmen and new transfer students.

“We are excited about this summer’s orientations as we transition these students from the recruiting stage into a full integration of the Mississippi College experience,” says administrator Jonathan Ambrose.

The schedule for visiting students, parents and other family members will be tweaked a bit. It should be better than ever. The visitors will meet with President Lee Royce, several deans, faculty members, coaches and student leaders, among others.

“This year we have revamped the schedule to truly assimilate new students to the expectations of academics as well as getting involved on campus,” says Ambrose, assistant vice president for student affairs.

There are non-stop activities once the students arrive. The second day of orientation features a breakfast for the student-athletes at the school cafeteria and an opportunity to break bread with coaches. A worship service is set for Swor Auditorium at 8:30 a.m. on June 2. Activities should wrap up around 11 a.m. that Friday.

Orientations are a terrific way to forge new friendships, have a little fun, experience one night in residence halls, and discover a smorgasbord of student organizations. There’s time to register for classes, find out about Christian ministries, meet key staffers, shop at the bookstore and much more.

The cost is $200 for freshmen, and $65 for transfer students.

An MC psychology major, Hannah Kanengiser, 20, of Pearl gives high marks to her summer orientation a few years ago. “As a senior, my closest MC friendships were built at orientation,” said the Pearl High graduate. “To this day, I will always treasure these memories.”

MC student Madison Wright, 20, of Brandon liked her summer orientation at the 191-year-old university. “Orientation proved to me the people at MC care about your education and your success,” she said. “They showed me they would help in every way possible to reach my goals.”

An MC senior psychology major, Jamie Kurlej, is sold on the benefits of orientation. “It’s not only informative, but it’s also fun and engaging.” The Delaware native met some of her closest friends at her orientation two years ago.

Other sessions for incoming MC freshmen are scheduled for July 13-14, and July 27-28. Orientations for new transfers will be June 22 and July 26.

Parents won’t be ignored. They are invited to learn details about MC financial aid, tour the campus, and dine at the cafeteria. There will be plenty of time to visit with the Christian university’s faculty and staff.

For students who missed out, MC leaders say there will be one final abbreviated orientation on August 21 followed by registration for fall classes on the Clinton campus.
