I’ve known Mr. LaVern Butler all my life. Mike, one of his sons, was the same age as me. Twins Jeff and Judy were always apart of my life. I loved LaVern’s wife Bonnie. Honestly, Bonnie was one of the funniest people I ever knew. If you know Judy, now you know where she got her laughter!
LaVern was 97 years old when he contracted COVID-19. A World War Veteran, LaVern was a tough old bird! He had seen a lot in his time and accomplished a lot.
He was a faithful reader of MageeNews.com. I guess he was my oldest reader!
LaVern died Wednesday at Magee General Hospital. (Another statistic for MS Dept of Health). One thing for sure, LaVern was no statistic! He was a man who loved Simpson and Smith County. He loved his family. He loved his friends….and he loved his church.
I remember when the coffee group at Ward’s celebrated his 90th birthday. LaVern lived by himself, continued to drive, and had an active social life!
I am sad…just as many people are. I’m not only sad for LaVern’s family, but the families who have lost love ones during the holidays. Any time someone dies, sadness comes. But, I believe the holidays pull a double whammy .
My heart is so sad for Judy and her family and Jeff and his family. Judy and Jeff have suffered several losses this year.
As we look to 2021, let us look forward to a year of continued friendships, a year of time with our families, a year showing love for others, and most of all a year of prayer. The Lord has brought me through so many dark dark areas. I know the power of His love. In times when our hearts are so sad, we must cling to our Savior.
I hope everyone has a Happy New Year and a blessed 2021.
