The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Lady Wolves (1-0, 0-0) had strong outing in the 2017-2018 opener against the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs. Co-Lin defeated Holmes 81-65 while shooting a blistering 53 percent from three-point land.

“It was a good win for us, I thought they played well in the first half, and we did an even better job in the second half by running our offense well,” said Lady Wolves head coach Gwyn Young.

Action was back-and-forth early in the contest as the game was tied six different times in the opening quarter of play.

In the second period the Lady Wolves went on a 10-4 run and stretched their lead 32-22 just over six minutes left in the half. The Lady Bulldogs quickly rallied back and cut Co-Lin’s lead to just one, 36-35 heading into the locker rooms.

Holmes came out firing in the second half and led 42-40 three minutes into the third quarter. The Lady Bulldog lead was short lived and proved to be their final lead of the game. The Lady Wolves rattled off a 16-4 run over the next four minutes of play and pulled back to a 10-point lead.

The Lady Wolves never looked back in the fourth quarter as Co-Lin outscored the Lady Bulldogs 21-12 to secure the victory.

Sophomore Alexus Holt, an Epps, La. native, led Co-Lin’s offensive attack. The shifty guard posted 19 points and five rebounds. T’Kyra Hicks, a freshman from Greenville, Miss., added 17 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Ciara Norwood rounded out Co-Lin’s double-digit scores with 13 points. Norwood and Kyeonia Harris, Co-Lin’s freshman point guard, both led the team with five assists each. Diamond Smith, a sophomore from Union Church, also posted solid numbers as she netted nine points and brought down eight rebounds.

“Hicks and Norwood were two freshmen got double figures and did great on defense…Diamond [Smith] was a big factor for us on the inside,” said Young. “I was very pleased overall and thought we a lot of people that played well.”

Nina Carpenter’s 16 points and eight rebounds led Holmes. Kamelia Lacy and Aneisha Evans added 14 points and 11 points respectively.

Co-Lin shot 39 percent (24-for-62) from the field, 53 percent (9-for-17) from the three-point line, and 73 percent (24-for-33) from the foul stripe. The Lady Bulldogs finished the night shooting 46 percent (26-for-57) from the field, 14 percent (1-for-7) from beyond the arc, and 57 percent (12-for-21) from the free throw line.

The Lady Wolves are back in action Monday, November 6 at 6:00 p.m. as Co-Lin travels to Moorhead, Miss. to take on the Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans. Follow @colinathletics on Twitter for updates.
