WESSON – The Co-Lin Women’s Basketball team returned to action hosting Southwest Mississippi in non-conference action on Thursday, December 1. The Lady Wolves beat the Lady Bears, 68-64, in a thrilling contest that needed overtime to decide a winner.

The opening minutes of the first quarter saw the Lady Wolves dominate the Lady Bears as they went on an 11-0 scoring run to hold that lead with 5:26 left to play. The Lady Bears responded with a 12-11 scoring run to close out the quarter, but the Lady Wolves held a 22-11 lead at the end of play.

 

The Lady Bears came storming out in the second quarter as they went on a 12-2 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 24-23 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. However, the teams matched their scoring outputs over the closing minutes as they added six points each leaving the Lady Wolves holding a slim lead at 30-29 as the teams entered the locker rooms halftime.

 

The third quarter saw the Lady Bears outscore the Lady Wolves, 9-7, to hold a 38-37 lead at the end of play. The fourth quarter saw both teams explode offensively as the Lady Wolves opened the quarter with an 8-4 scoring run to take a 45-41 lead with just over seven minutes of play remaining. The Lady Bears then used a quick 5-0 run to regain the lead at 46-45 with around six minutes of play left. The teams then traded baskets and leads for the next few minutes; however, the Lady Bears were able to slightly pull away from the Lady Wolves as they held a 56-51 lead with just under two minutes to play. Sophomore guard Leilani Lewis (Baton Rouge, LA) then scored six straight points on back-to-back possessions to give the Lady Wolves a 57-56 lead with just over one minute left to play. The Lady Bears then went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to tie the game at 57-57 with 30 seconds remaining leading to regulation finishing with that score and sending the game into overtime.

 

In the overtime period, the Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Bears, 11-7, including six points from sophomore guard Tandria Minor (Brandon) while sophomore guard Zykeria Anderson (Edwards) went 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the Lady Wolves final two possessions to seal the 68-64 victory.

 

The Lady Wolves were led by  ZykeriaAnderson and Leilani Lewis who scored 19 points each, which was a new career high for Lewis as both added seven rebounds each while Anderson also had four assists and Lewis had one. Sophomore forward Kiersten Ball (Louisville) notched her first career double-double as she had 10 points and led the team with 10 rebounds.

 

Sophomore guard Tandria Minor and sophomore forward Jamey McDaniel (Summit) had six points each while Minor led the team in assist and steals with six and three respectively while McDaniel also added nine rebounds to her night. Freshman forward Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge, LA) had four points while freshman guard Kayla Howard (Shaw) and freshman forward Kyla Farmer (Conehatta) had two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin improves to 7-1 overall and will return to action hosting Baton Rouge on Saturday, December 3. Tip-off between the Lady Bears and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
