The Mississippi College softball team extended their win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Division I Alcorn State on Wednesday afternoon at the ASU Softball Field.
The Lady Choctaws (18-9) needed extra innings to get a 4-0 win in the opener, while the jumped out early for a 14-3 win over the Braves (4-13) in the second game.
The first game was a pitcher’s duel between senior Carlie Sargent and Ashley Breal as the teams went 8.0 innings without scoring a single run. The Oxford native struck out 10 batters, giving her double-figure strikeouts for the third time in her last five games.
MC’s best scoring chance came in the first as they put runners on second and third with no outs, but Breal wriggled off the hook. ASU was able to get runners to second and third with one out in the sixth, but Sargent coaxed a couple of soft outs to end the inning.
Beginning in the eighth, the teams placed a runner on second base, moving the runner over to third on sacrifice bunts with the opening batter. Both pitchers were able to keep the game scoreless with more timely pitching.
The Lady Choctaws would finally scratch the scoreboard in the ninth as sophomore Katherine Lee scored the eventual game-winning run on one of four errors by the Braves in the inning. MC would push the lead out to 4-0, and Sargent retired ASU in order in the ninth to get the victory.
In the second game, MC equaled their hit total from the first game with the first two batters as Lee singled and junior Megan Everett doubled to open the game. Freshman Alexia Harmon drove in the two runs with a single, and MC took a 3-0 lead after their half of the first on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cheyenne Mathews.
The Lady Choctaws would tack on a run in the third and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, capped off by a double steal from Everett and Lee to push the lead to 8-0 after four innings.
Senior Madison Oliver, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, pushed the lead out to 9-0 with one of her two-baggers to score junior Haley Thompson.
After the Braves extended the game with two runs in their half of the fifth, the Lady Choctaws would put the game out of reach in the sixth with five runs, highlighted by a two-run double from freshman Kristen Qualls and an RBI double from senior Lauren Mulligan.
Five different Lady Choctaws had multiple hits in the game, including senior Kimmie Conley, who was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and extended her hitting streak to six games with three hits in the twin-bill.
Harmon led MC with three RBI in the game as eight different Lady Choctaws drove in runs in the contest.
Freshman Penny Nichols (8-4) picked up her fifth straight win, allowing just two earned runs over the six-inning effort.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action this weekend when they will host Christian Brothers for a three-game Gulf South Conference series, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m.
