Mayor Dale Berry called the meeting to order. Patrick Brown led in prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Berry gave the Mayor’s Report:
The paving projects have begun. At this time, work is being done on Education Drive (beside Loves) and Goodwater Road in front of the Elementary School. “Each ward is getting asphalt,” stated Berry. The Mayor explained that we are stretching every dollar we have in the budget to improve as many areas as possible.
According to Berry, a new building is coming to Main Street Magee. A building will be constructed in the vacant lot next to Buffington Law Office. The floor plans were presented to the Mayor and building inspector, Joe Worrell. The name of the individual building the building was not disclosed.
Mayor Berry explained the Fire Works Ordinance which allows fire works to be discharge 7 days prior to the actual holiday and 7 days after holiday between the hours of 10 AM-10 PM. The Mayor stated if anyone is shooting fireworks after 10 PM call the police department and report the situation.
Sales Tax collection during the month of May is up by $12,000 from May 2017. Sales Tax is up $54,000 for the year.
$100.000 needs to be budgeted for the lagoon and $100.000 need to be budged for a new fire truck in the upcoming fiscal year.
The city appropriated $35,000 for basketball courts in the Goodwater Community. Patrick Brown has requested the city wait on construction of the courts until everything is settled at the old elementary school building.
A new business is coming to Magee, Fast Pace Urgent Care, which will be located next to Tractor Supply. A ground breaking is scheduled for Thursday @ 10 AM and the public is invited.
Hayes Patrick, candidate for House of Representatives District 77, gave a three minute talk explaining his desire to represent our area.
There are 25,000 people in District 77.
Dusty Bourn came before the board requesting permission to bring sky diving back to the Magee Airport. The board asked Bourn to bring a list of the land owners who border the airport property. No action was taken. Dusty is to come back to the board with additional information.
Doris Adcox, Executive director of the Magee Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is partnering with the City for the July 4th Fireworks celebration. The chamber will sponsor a barbecue cook-off. Information about the event will be released by the chamber. Doris expressed her appreciation to the city for their support of the Chamber.
The minutes and claim docket were approved.
Pastor Gene Henderson, Glen Mitchell, and Dennis (?) with M.O.R.E. appeared before the board to explain the planned use of the old CWC building. The group plans to house newly released inmates and assist with their acclamation into society. The men who will be housed at the facility will be closely screened before being placed in the facility. The building will be renovated from a prison to a home atmosphere There will be 10 private bed rooms in addition to 2 apartments to house the Resident Manager and Assistant Manager on site. (For more details click here) All cost of renovation will be on the tenants, not the city. The city will receiver rent of $2,500 per month. The board voted to proceed forward to explore the possibility of M.O.R.E. locating in the old CWC.
Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie asked permission of the board to purse a grant participation for a new piece of equipment. The board granted his request. Valadie said the city has 4 fire works stands which have been checked by Valadie for proper installation and location. The fire works stand at Walmart will be moved further away from the gas pumps by Friday of this week. Fireworks can be sold two weeks before a holiday.
Police Chief Randy Crawford reported that the PD has received the new weapons and certification. Crawford requested a work shop to explain the CAD system to the board. The work shop will be July 9th at 5 PM. CAD is a computer-aided design, diagnosis, and dispatch system which eliminates handwritten records.
