Early Sunday morning at approximately 12:39 am, Magee Police officers responded to a disturbance and a possible armed robbery at CEFCO in Magee. Upon arrival, officers learned that a white male, identified as Joshua Shane Carrell, had been involved in a dispute and was actively pursuing two white females inside the store. The females were able to lock themselves inside the restroom to protect themselves.
During the incident, the suspect produced a knife and made verbal threats to retrieve a firearm, stating that the store was being robbed, according to a witness. The suspect then fled the scene on foot toward the wooded area behind the Quality Inn.
Magee Police officers, along with the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office, quickly converged on the area and established a secure perimeter. Officers held the scene until one of Magee’s K-9 units arrived. K-9 Officer Brita and her handler were deployed and immediately picked up the suspect’s scent. K-9 Brita led officers directly to the suspect’s location in a wooded area.
After hearing clear verbal commands from officers, the suspect surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody safely and transported to the Magee Jail, where he was processed.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This situation could have ended very differently. Credit goes to the CEFCO clerk for remaining calm under pressure and to all law enforcement officers involved for their professionalism and teamwork. Special recognition goes to K-9 Brita, her handler, and the assisting officers who responded to help secure the area. Teamwork like this keeps our community safe.
