John David Moore, 82 of Union, MS passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at the Son`s residence in Union, Mississippi.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Harrisville Baptist Church in Harrisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 05, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Harrisville Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Harrisville Cemetery. Bro. Richard Mayfield will officiate. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall is in charge of arrangements. 601-847-4401

John Moore was born on October 3, 1941, in Standing Pine, MS, in Leake County. He graduated high school from Walnut Grove, obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Delta State University and then a Master’s from the University of Southern Mississippi. John and Betty both moved to Harrisville to teach; they rented rooms in the same boarding house, from Mrs. Barlow.  Their students played matchmakers; and on June 3, 1966, they were married. On August 11, 1972 they welcomed their first child, daughter, Laurie Moore Brewer; then, a son, John David Moore, II on July 1, 1974. John had a career in education that spanned 31 years, which included coaching basketball and baseball, teaching, and serving as the principal of Magee High School. He was a beloved teacher, coach, principal, and School Board Member at Harrisville, West Union, Magee and for all Simpson County Schools.

He was a faithful member of Harrisville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He served his community as a member of the Harrisville Water Association board and the Harrisville Economic Council.  He loved the Lord, his family, his community, his fellow man, gospel sings, and, of course, hunting and scouting the woods for wild berries, grapes, and wild plums.  Betty made many a jar of preserves from John’s labors.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Moore; mother, Lillian Watkins Moore; brothers, Truman Moore and Ray Allen; sisters, Donna Allen and Ruby Allen Freeman.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Tannehill Moore of Union, MS;  son, John David Moore, II (Rita) of Union, MS;  daughter, Laurie Moore Brewer (J.J.) of Harrisville; 5 very special grandchildren, Adam Moore (Madison) of Hattiesburg, Johnny Walters of Harrisville, Jesse Walters (Kaylee) of Soso, Nate Moore of Union and Jonas Moore of Union;  6 great-grandchildren Roland Walters Barrett Walters, Elliott Moore, Clarissa Kelly, Rosie Walters and Everlee Walters; brothers, Odis Moore (Louisa) of Edinburg, MS, Odell Buddy Moore (Shirley) of Clifton, MS;  sister, Sue Moore Frakes (Dan) of Carthage

Pallbearers will be Adam Moore, Nate Moore, Jonas Moore, Jesse Walters, Johnny Walters, and Hunter Dedmon.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Harrisville Baptist Church’s media fund.
