JCJC’s “Madrigals & More” concert hosted by Laurel’s First-Trinity Presbyterian Church
ELLISVILLE –Jones County Junior College’s Fine Arts Department invites the public to enjoy an evening of Renaissance music with the JCJC music department at its annual “Madrigals and More” concert, free of charge. The various small ensembles of JCJC students and faculty will be performing at First-Trinity Presbyterian Church in Laurel, on Tuesday, October 24, at 7 p.m. This special event spotlights a diverse group of performers from student ensembles and solos to faculty solos, and faculty-student collaborations featuring music from composers such as Orlando di Lasso, John Dowland, Pierre Certon, Thomas Morley, Hans Leo Hassler, Santiago de Murcia, Domenico Scarlatti, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Thomas Greaves, John Wilbye, John Farmer, and others.

The evening of Renaissance and Baroque music will begin with a stately trumpet fanfare played by JCJC high brass instructor, Dr. Patrick Richards. Following the fanfare, JC Voices, under the direction of Dr. Susan A. Smith will perform a variety of selections from the Renaissance period, like the processional, Pastyme with Good Companye, and recessional, Innsbruck, I Now Must Leave Thee.  This year, in addition to popular tunes of the 16th century, the madrigal singers will highlight a few lesser-known madrigals, including Saccia na cosa, which will be accompanied by new faculty member and JC Voices accompanist, Dr. David Goldblatt on the harpsichord, guitar instructor, Dr. Michael Boyd on the lute, and JCJC flute instructor and assistant director of bands, Lindsey Keay on the flute.

The concert will include solos, duets, the women’s ensemble, and small group madrigals and motets. JCJC sophomores, Addison Nelms of Brandon and Amy Champion of Lafayette, Louisiana will be accompanied by Boyd and Keay as they sing the beautiful duet Fuggi, Fuggi, Fuggi da questo cielo. Boyd will also accompany JCJC sophomore, Katie Hovan of Hattiesburg, performing O Death Rock Me Asleep, ascribed to Ann Boleyn.

In addition to the choral selections, JCJC piano instructor, Dr. Victoria Johnson, will perform Sonata in E Major, K. 380 by Domenico Scarlatti, and Boyd will perform La Guastala by Santiago de Murcia. New faculty member, Dr. Mackenzie Edgley will conduct the JCJC Brass Ensemble in three traditional madrigals, Come Away Sweet Love, Flora Gave Me Fairest Flowers, and Fair Phyllis I Saw.

Also performing will be the flute choir, conducted by Keay, and saxophone ensemble, directed by the director of JCJC bands, Dr. Ben Burge. The saxophones will play the hauntingly beautiful O Magnum Mysterium, traditionally a six-voice motet, and the flute choir, in contrast, will delight the audience with folk songs and an arrangement of a four-voice madrigal, Il est bel et bon.
