James “Spurgeon” Weatherall
(3/13/1943 – 7/19/2024)
James “Spurgeon” Weatherall, Jr., M.D. of Shivers, MS, went home to be with his Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 81 on July 19, 2024. He was born March 13, 1943. A native of Jackson, MS, who graduated from Murrah High School in 1961. He graduated from Mississippi State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in1963. He continued his academic career receiving a medical degree from the University of Mississippi
School of Medicine in 1968.
He went on to do an internship at Wilford Hall USAF Hospital 1968 through 1969 in SanAntonio, TX. Afterwards, he was a flight surgeon USAF from 1969 to 1971. This was followed by a two year radiology residency at the University Medical Center in Jackson, MS from 1971 through1973. He practiced family medicine in Moss Point and Clinton, MS, then practice emergency medicine at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, MS, where he retired. While at Singing River Hospital he served as chairman of both the Department of Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. Spurgeon was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed deer hunting and fishing with his family.
He was married to the love of his life, Shirley, on August 29, 1981 and was preceded in death by her. He was also preceded in death by his sons, Scott Weatherall and Bobby Turner. He will be fondly remembered by his son Curtis (daughter in law Heather), daughters Leslie Weatherall and Belinda Turner, daughter in law Robynne Weatherall, daughter in law Julie Turner, five grandchildren; Jackson Weatherall, Case Weatherall, Betsy Turner Hollingsworth (Josh), Cassie Turner Lane, Ben Turner and fifteen great-grandchildren in addition to a host of other family members and friends. A visitation will be held at The Pentecostals of New Hebron, 525 Jones Street, New Hebron,MS on Tuesday July 30, 2024 from 11a.m. -12 p.m. with a service to follow. The service will be officiated by Rev. Stanley Spikes and Rev. Cliff Hilton. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee is in charge of arrangements. 601-849-5031
Pallbearers will be Jackson Weatherall, Case Weatherall, Jordan Boyd, Joshua Hollingsworth, Ephraim Lane and Dylan Sherman.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charities, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
