James B. (Rusty) Sykes, Jr. (January 20, 1941 –November 30, 2021)

On January 20, 1941, James B. (Rusty) Sykes, Jr., was born in Hattiesburg, MS.  His parents were James B. Sykes (1900-1965) and Germaine Pickering (1904-1988).  The family lived and worked in Simpson County, Mississippi.  At an early age Rusty was baptized, and in 1959 he graduated from Mendenhall High School.  In the fall of 1959, Rusty entered the University of Mississippi and joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity.  After graduation in 1963, Rusty returned to Simpson County where he was a lifelong resident.

In 1968, Rusty and Kathy Barrett were married and they enjoyed 53 years together.

Rusty, 80 years old, died unexpectedly on the morning of November 30, 2021, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson where he was undergoing tests and treatment.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Mrs. Kathy B. Sykes; one son, Rus Sykes (Allison); three grandchildren, Matthew Sykes, Jackson Sykes, Samuel Sykes; a niece, Amy Lee (Michael); nephews, Andy Barrett and John Barrett (Pamela); and many friends whom, along with his beloved wife, Kathy, and family, he loved unconditionally.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Rusty’s favorite charity, the Baptist Children’s Village, Post Office Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in Tutor Chapel with Bro. Michael Giles officiating. Interment will be at Mendenhall City Cemetery in Mendenhall.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Mendenhall.
