HYDE-SMITH STATEMENT ON BIDEN’S 2023 ‘BIG ON SPENDING, BIG ON TAX INCREASES’ BUDGET

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the FY2023 budget blueprint unveiled by President Biden on Monday:

“President Biden’s new budget doubles down on the failed priorities he and fellow Democrats attempted to force on the nation last year.  His fiscal year 2023 plan is again big on spending and big on tax increases, while being oblivious to the growing dangers that threaten our nation and our allies.

“There is hope that the 2023 budget and appropriations process will move quickly this year.  For that to happen, however, the President and his liberal friends will have to quickly abandon the same radical, leftist policies that derailed the 2022 process for so long.”

The Biden budget blueprint represents the starting point from which Congress will develop the FY2023 Budget Resolution and subsequent appropriations bills to fund federal programs and activities in a new fiscal year that begins Oct. 1, 2022.

Hyde-Smith pointed to items in the President’s budget blueprint that are immediately unacceptable:

  • Amid an international security crisis, only a 4 percent increase for defense spending.
  • Amid rising deficits, a 14 percent increase for domestic spending—including a placeholder to revive the radical tax and spend scheme that imploded last winter.
  • Amid an ongoing and growing crisis at the border, less funding for the Department of Homeland Security, and just level funding for the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Amid ongoing need for flood control structures, a 39 percent reduction for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi River and Tributaries work.
  • Amid high inflation and other economic woes, a recommendation to impose $2.5 trillion in new or increased taxes.
