Born into the loving arms of Rooker Wells and Maude Flint on August 12, 1927, in Magee, Mississippi, Gussie’s early years were spent wrapped in the warmth of her family in Collins, Mississippi.
Demonstrating a dedicated commitment to education early in life, she pursued her academic endeavors with fervor, graduating from Jones Junior College and subsequently, the University of Southern Mississippi. It was here that she received her degree in Education, laying the foundation for her impactful career in teaching.
Gussie’s heart belonged to one man, S.D. (Steve) Cole, whom she wed soon after graduation. Together, they embarked on a new chapter in Bisbee, Arizona. It was in this spirited town that Gussie devoted many years to shaping young minds and inspiring hearts within the school system. Her passion for education and unwavering dedication did not go unnoticed; over the years, Gussie was lauded with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Woman of the Year award, in recognition of her contributions. Upon retiring, Gussie and S.D. returned to their roots in Magee, where Gussie continued to leave her mark on education within the Simpson County School System. Beyond her professional achievements, Gussie possessed an insatiable zest for life, exploring the corners of the United States and venturing abroad, finding joy in each journey’s new experiences. A woman of profound faith, Gussie was a devout member of Christ Fellowship, attending services and engaging with her church community as long as her health permitted. Her unwavering belief and the love she shared have left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have known her.
