JACKSON, MISS.—Football season is officially underway in Mississippi and that means hitting the road to see your favorite team. Before heading out, start your trip off right with the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) free travel resources.

Safety is and always will be MDOT’s top priority. To help drivers do their part to take action and reduce the number of fatal crashes in the state, GoMDOT.com/DriveSmartMS offers videos that teach motorists how to safely navigate work zones and intersections, along with other safe driving tips.

“MDOT’s travel resources aim to increase the traveling public’s awareness and safety. While MDOT strives to improve safety on state highways on a daily basis, drivers can take safety into their own hands by following simple safety tips,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “One of the most important safety steps drivers can take is simply paying attention and staying off the phone, especially in work zones where road conditions may change quickly.”

In addition to cutting out distracted driving, drivers should:

  • Always buckle up
  • Leave a safe distance between other vehicles
  • Obey the posted speed limit
  • Be patient, especially in work zones
  • Find a designated driver
  • Watch out for cyclists and pedestrians

While all MDOT projects aim to improve safety for road users, certain roadway or intersection improvements such as roundabouts, rumble strips and cable barriers are specifically designed to help reduce and lessen the severity of crashes when they occur.

Other roadway improvements, such as J-Turns, Diverging Diamond Interchanges and Continuous Flow Intersections may be unfamiliar to some motorists. At GoMDOT.com/DriveSmartMS, users can learn how to use these safety features.

“Football season is here and the holidays are right around the corner, meaning citizens across the state will be traveling more. Please make safety a priority and take advantage of these free travel resources,” said White. “These resources will help Mississippians drive smarter and more prepared so everyone makes it home at the end of the day.”
