Last night, Pete Howell was officially recognized as the new principal of Magee High School. A brief biography of Pete Howell was submitted to the board for consideration, it reads as follows:

“Pete Howell, 48, of Mize, MS most recently was the principal of Prentiss High School in Jefferson Davis County. He served in that capacity for the past 2 years. Under his leadership Prentiss High School improved from a “D” school rating to a high “C” rating. Only Prentisss High School’s graduation rate over the past four years kept it from being classified as a “B” school. Howell also instituted new programs which reduced student discipline referrals school wide and raised over $11,000 in donations for Prentiss High School athletics programs.

Before being principal of Prentiss High School, Howell was employed for 13 years by Smith County School District as a classroom teacher, alternative school director, and assistant principal. Howell was a law enforcement officer before becoming an educator. He worked for the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, Magee Police Department, and as a contract narcotics agent for Capital Cities Metro Narcotics Task Force, part of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. Howell was named Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1995 while at Magee Police Department.

Howell is also a US Army Veteran where he served as a paratrooper and an infantry sergeant. He is a 1985 graduate of Mize High School and has earned a Bachelors of Arts dergree in History and a Master of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.

He is married to Lydia Robinson Howell of Mize. They have 3 children and are members of New Sardis Baptist Church.”
