Gene Bennett, as he was known growing up in Magee, was a graduate of Magee High School where he was involved in sports and band.  He played trumpet and was the Drum Major of the marching band.  He was also active in the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, Magee.  As a result of his love for music and the sense of a calling of God in His life, he surrendered his life to the Lord and desired to serve Him in the local church through music ministry.

Following His graduation from Magee high School, he attended Mississippi College and studied Church Music.  While at MC, he began serving churches as Minister of Music.  He met Pat while in college and the two of them were married in December of 1956. After completing his studies at Mississippi College, Gene then attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in pursuit of his Master’s Degree in Church Music.

Gene served in full-time vocational ministry at Broadmoor Baptist Church, Jackson, MS, Berny Points Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL and First Baptist Church, Rayville, LA.  During these years he was also involved in mission endeavors traveling to Australia and New Zealand to lead music in evangelistic crusades.

In 1973, Gene returned to Magee with his family and began working in the Insurance industry.  He worked for the Travelers, Turner Insurance Agency, before becoming an independent Nationwide Agent.  Although he enjoyed his work in this industry, he never lost his love of serving the local church in music ministry. Proof of this was seen in the fact that he continued to serve in Music Ministry in a bi-vocational capacity until his retirement. Upon his retirement, he continued to faithfully serve in the music ministry of his home church, FBC Magee.

Gene loved His Lord, his church family, his work family and his biological family.  Being an only son, Gene did his part in passing down the heritage of a Christian home while adding limbs to the Hubbard family tree.  He was blessed with four children, six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Gene Hubbard was known by many titles, Gene Bennett, Gene, Mr. Gene, Bro. Gene, Son, Daddy, and Papaw.  If you were to ask him what title was the most important to him, he would quickly remind you that his favorite title was Child of God.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Malinda Mahaffey; father, Walter Hubbard; mother, Valeria Welch Hubbard.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Patricia Hudspeth Hubbard; sons, Gene Bennett Hubbard, Jr., Timothy Lee Hubbard (Melanie) and Jonathan Scott Hubbard (Sherrie); 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Brien Hubbard, Brandon Hubbard, Lee Hubbard, John Mahaffey, Bennett Hubbard, and Cannon McAlpin.

Honorary pallbearers will be The Jimmy Holbrook Sunday School Class.

Special music will be performed by Melanie Hubbard.

An online guestbook may be signed at www.colonialchapelmageemendenhall.com

In lieu of flowers the family requests that you give donations to a ministry or mission of a local church or to the Gideons International.

So very sorry for your loss. Mr Gene was my insurance agent but he was so much more for me and my family. He will be missed but we are comforted knowing he is now healed!
