Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, September 5, 2023 for their regular scheduled meeting. The meeting was the first of the newly elected board members present. Lawana Thompson is the newest elected alderman for Ward 2.
Mayor Dale Berry reminded residents that anyone who is hired for tree removal within the city is responsible for the debris removal.
CMPDD is hosting a grants workshop Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Zoning Director Penny Aguirre will attend.
The city has a budget meeting Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. The meetings are open to the public.
The board approved for a resolution to be drawn for the adoption of plan 4 of the cities redistricting. See the attached map below. Once the resolution is developed it will be presented to the board for adoption.
Park Director Jimmy Zilla reminded the public soccer registration is under way with 10 days remaining. Please register your child if you are interested in participating. The Sportsplex will host a small tournament this weekend. Jackson Prep has a tournament scheduled for next weekend and the MAIS State tournament is scheduled for the end of the month September 30th – October 2, 2023. These tournaments are expected to draw large crowds to the city.
Police Chief Shane Little advised the police department assisted with security during the Magee vs Mendenhall game Friday, September 1, 2023. Chief advised some students were turned away wearing hoodies due to safety reasons with shirts being very oversized and unable to see what could be potentially hiding underneath. No incidents were reported at the game.
Airport Manager Ashley Steele presented a quote to the board for replacement of copper pipe that is rusting and damaging the fuel system at the airport. The board approved the request. The quote from Rebel Services, LLC was $3,16.97 .
New Building inspector Kara Lucas presented an update to the board on activity since taking the position. Permits and property inspections are taking place daily. Building Inspector, Fire Marshall, and Zoning Director are meeting once a week.
Code Enforcer Shane Steele advised citations in court were issued Tuesday. The team is working protocols for removal of inoperable vehicles.
Fire Marshall Charlie Valadie advised the fire department had nearly double their call volume due to dry and hazards conditions. The department had approximately 46 calls this past month for grass fires and dry conditions. Some calls are repeat calls where the fire re started and had to be extinguished. Valadie advised the city is still under a fire ban and the penalties will be enforced for anyone burning.
The Board approved Clerk Jon Styron to attend a class in Hattiesburg for work on his Certified Municipal Clerk program.
With no further business meeting entered executive session to discuss employee issues.
