JACKSON – Attorney General Lynn Fitch joined Republican Attorneys General from 20 other states to submit a letter to the United States Senate, laying out the legal case for rejecting the Democrat House articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.
“The Democrats have sidelined important work for the people of Mississippi and the nation in pursuing this hyper-partisan and baseless inquiry,” said Fitch. “Their legal case lacks any foundation in law or fact, and the Senate should reject the House Articles and get back to work on the people’s business.”
In the letter, these state chief legal officers also write about the dangers of the House impeachment articles and note that “If not expressly repudiated by the Senate, the theories animating both Articles will set a precedent that is entirely contrary to the Framers’ design and ruinous to the most important governmental structure protections contained in our Constitution: the separation of powers.”
The letter was signed by the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia.
