The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks’ (MDWFP) Mississippi Museum of Natural Science (MMNS) invites you to join a distinguished lineup of experts as they share their latest research at upcoming “First Tuesday Lectures”. The hour-long lectures are included with Museum admission or MMNS Foundation Membership.
August 5: “Crayfish, Crawfish, or Crawdads? Crayfish Diversity and Conservation in Mississippi”. Join Conservation Resource Biologist Calvin Rezac as he shares ongoing efforts to understand and conserve the 68 species of crayfish native to Mississippi.

September 2: “A Shell-ebration of Mississippi’s Turtle Diversity”. Join Dr. Grover Brown, professor of Biology at Jacksonville State University, as he discusses how Mississippi is home to over 30 species of freshwater turtles, tortoises and marine turtles, making it one of the most biodiverse areas for turtles in the world. What’s more exciting is there are species still being discovered in the state!
October 7: “Managing Healthy Deer Herds Starts with Sound Science”. Join John Gruchy, MDWFP Private Lands Program Coordinator, as he discusses how MDWFP has been working with landowners and hunters to collect data and manage the state’s deer herd for many years. More recently, efforts have focused on working with landowners to manage habitat as well. Common deer management opportunities and mistakes will be discussed.
