At Thursday night, February 8th, meeting of the Simpson County School District, an announcement was made concerning the forty year old desegregation case. Basically, SCSD is clear in all matters of the suit. The original suit was filed in 1970.
Press Release:
A federal appeals court has affirmed that the Simpson County School District has complied with its desegregation obligations. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that the remaining provisions of the forty-year-old desegregation case were properly dismissed.
“We are very pleased with this decision, because the District has worked very hard to meet the demands of the Consent Decree,” said Superintendent Greg Paes.
The original desegregation case was filed in 1970. According to Stacey Herrin, the School Board’s President, “this is an important moment in the history of the Simpson County School District. The appeals court has said the District’s forty-year journey toward unitary statue has been completed.”
Courts had earlier determined the District had satisfied the majority of its desegregation obligations, leaving only hiring practices at issue.
