Fashion Hit and Misses
By: Lacey Rowe
Fashion has always been important to me. Since childhood I would notice what people around me were wearing. Its always been more than clothing to me. It was about that field trip at school, the trip to the movie, the pageant(s) and prom night. It was my way to show my personality to the world. Clothes help me to feel confident and beautiful, to express myself, to stand apart from a crowd or to fit in seamlessly. It is an outward celebration of our inner self. I’ve read that we should all dress like we want to be treated and I truly believe we should do that. This is certainly true if you are employed in a professional business environment and dealing with the public. If you want to be treated professionally, you must dress professionally.
My style has changed over the years but what hasn’t changed is that I believe it is a way to express yourself.
My love for fashion began with my first pair of jeans. I remember it well, they were dark denim bell bottoms. I had a mid drift top and I was a proud elementary student in that outfit. I still have a pair of jeans that I bought and my mom and I dressed them up with glittery ribbon and frayed trim. A sentimental garment, no doubt, and I still love them! These jeans and other favorite outfits have taught me how appealing individual style can be.
Now this isn’t to say fashion has been easy for me. I’ve always found joy in trying new styles, but many times finding the right clothes for me was challenging and difficult. What looked good on some people didn’t look good on me. Some clothes seemed to highlight my flaws more than my assets. Dresses that looked good on the rack were unflattering once I put them on. Shirts didn’t hang right and pants that fit my waist didn’t fit in the thighs. It was stressful and disheartening to try on beautiful pieces and everyday clothes that just didn’t work for my body type and me. As I got older I knew to steer my disappointment about things I couldn’t change about my body to positive thoughts. I learned that its about just trying to look like myself. Fashion isn’t about anyone else or who you want to look like, its about yourself–that you feel beautiful wearing it and it makes you most comfortable, which leads to confidence.
Clothes may be what we wear but personal style helps us show who we are.
The jeans in this outfit is one of my favorites; Flying Monkey jeans from Holly’s Flower Shop in Collins, Lapis Coco Top from BB’s Boutique in Magee, and Rag and Bone Boots from Nordstrom’s.
Notice the cut of the bottom of the jeans, this gives a fresh edgy look. You can do this to any pair of jeans in your closet to bring new life to them. Just take a pair of scissors and cut the hem of the jeans high in the front about 1 to 2 inches above your ankle, but keep the back hem an inch or two below that cut. The frayed hem and asymmetrical cut brings new life to an otherwise pair that has become boring.
