Disciple Now (DNow) 2019 is a weekend where students from churches across Simpson County gather to worship and lift up the name of Jesus. This year, over 600 students gathered together. The worship services were held at Corinth Baptist Church, with the Jonathon Turner Band leading worship and West Garner from The Springs Church sharing The Word.
The theme for this weekend was GENUINE. West Garner shared what being genuine means and what that looks like. He challenged us to take off the mask and be the person God has called us to be. In our world today, it’s easy to put on a mask and act like we are perfect when in reality we are not. We all have problems, and the root of our problems is sin. We get so tangled up in sin for so long that it doesn’t feel like sin. One of the many things West Garner said that stuck with me was “God doesn’t forget our sin. He chooses to not bring it up.” God is able to forgive all sins. We just have to ask. In order to be who God has called us to be, we have to stop wearing a mask and putting on a facade. It’s time for us to be real. We have to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24).
DNow is full of worship and Bible study, but on Saturday afternoon students had the opportunity to participate in a service project. Our youth group at FBC Magee, as well as Goodwater Baptist Church, Antioch Baptist Church, and Corinth Baptist Church participated in cleaning up McNair Springs. Thanks to Leman Cockrell, lunch was ready for us when we arrived at McNair Springs. The projects consisted of painting, picking up trash, and cleaning up limbs and debris. There was also a group in town working to clean up flower beds. It was awesome to see students working together to make their community look better.
DNow 2019 was a great weekend. Lives were changed, and hope was found. We were challenged to be GENUINE, and I believe the students in Simpson County are ready to take off their mask and be the person God is calling them to be.
