On Tuesday, June 16th, Delores Vinson decided she had missed her husband ‘Piff’ long enough. She is not concerned with the worries of this world or a worn out body any longer. She’s had a great adventure throughout this life and said many times that she has been loved all her life. Now she is talking with the Greatest love of all, her Lord and Savior, Jesus the King of Glory.
Delores Knight Vinson was born November 4, 1932. At the time of her passing, “Dee” as she was affectionately known, lived in Magee, MS on 2nd Avenue in her husband’s childhood home. She was 93 years old.
Dee was born in Crackers Neck, in the Centerville Community Ellisville, MS, to Elmer and Erma Lee Knight. She was the eldest of three siblings and the only girl. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. Delores was born during the depression and although times were hard, love never lacked in their home and that love was shared for generations to come.
She met Robert “Piff” Vinson and married him at age 16. Unlike many, theirs was a marriage that lasted, full of love, life, and adventures together. They shared motorcycle trips on the Gold Wing Honda, beach trips in the RV, family reunion caravan trips, births, deaths, graduations, and a family that grew by leaps and bounds with up to 5 generations together at once, many times.
She was 18 when her first child was born in Laurel MS. Because there were 7 and 11 years between her and her brothers, she wanted her children closer together in age, so they were 2 ½ years apart. A boy and a girl, Robert and Karen. From these families, they now have grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great- great grandchildren spread all over the country.
Delores spent many years working at Magnetek, north of Magee. There she made life long friends. She was a proud member of the Busy Bees, and so many more groups. She was even a hospital volunteer for a time.
Delores Knight Vinson is survived by her son Robert (Cindy) Vinson of Magee Mississippi, her daughter Karen (Rick) Ward of Collins Mississippi, a sister-in-law, Ellen Knight of Gautier, Mississippi. Grandchildren: Tammie Sanford, Brice (Melissa) Vinson, Jo Anna (Grant) Shook, Kristie Matthews, and Brian Ward. Great grandchildren: Thomas Vinson, Carter Vinson, Levi Vinson, William Maddox, Shelby Maddox, Mollie Maddox, Aric (Angela) Anderson, Megan (Russell) Haehl, Chasidy Gilmore, Kae’Onna Walters, Serenity Molock, Lailani Johnson, Sam Green, Samantha Mastin, Angela Ward, Ashton Ward and Nico Ward; Great-great grandchildren: Aiden Anderson, Asher Anderson, Alaina Anderson, Avery Kirk, Kinley Kirk; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert ‘Piff’ Vinson; her parents, Elmer and Erma Lee Knight; a granddaughter April Ward; a great granddaughter Alicia Roberts; a grandson in-law Jody Matthews; and her brothers, Harold Knight and Benny Knight.
Visitation will be Friday, June 19th from 11:00-1:00 with the Service at 1:00, all at Magee First Baptist Church. If weather permits, then on to Magee City Cemetery.
