David Eugene Kennedy, Sr. (known to many as Gene) passed away in Magee, MS on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at the age of 95. Gene was born in Magee, MS to Olyer J. Kennedy and Julia (Johnson) Kennedy on April 23, 1926.
He spent his childhood in Magee and graduated from Magee High School before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He served two years before he returned home to pursue his education. Gene graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in accounting and went to work with Chevron Oil Company for 38 years. While in school, he met his wife of 70 years, Mildred (Mangum) Kennedy. Together, they had two children. Not one for idleness, Gene spent his free time exercising his talents as a green thumb in his vegetable garden, and out fishing all his family. His talents enabled him to share his produce with all those he loved, become known as the “peanut brittle man,” and pass on his wealth of knowledge to his children and grandchildren. Gene was devoted to God and his family. A quiet man, he led by example in his walk with his savior and through his deep commitment to his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter, Susan Kennedy McKinnie (Charles); daughter-in-law, Ouida Bates Kennedy; grandchildren, Scott David McKinnie (Megan), Allan Mangum McKinnie (Amanda), Michael David Kennedy (Cayla), Andrew Tyler Kennedy and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, his brother Truett Kennedy (Ruby), sister Judy Kennedy Tarbutton (James), and his son, David Eugene Kennedy, Jr.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful nurses of Sta-Home for caring for Gene during his last months.
