Pictured is Darein Spann, being congratulated by Principal Pete Howell from Magee High School.
Congratulations to Darein Spann, English teacher at Magee High School, for being chosen as not only Magee High School’s Teacher of the Year, but Simpson County District Teacher of the Year.
Darein is in his third year at Magee. He currently teaches Senior English and ACT prep. Before coming to Magee, he taught 9 years in Jackson. He has taught grades 7-12 and has taught 10th grade English for seven years. Currently, he serves as sponsor for the National Honor Society, co-sponsor of the Student Council, and chair of the English department. He has served on several education committees including Mayor Harvey Johnson education committee and the Clarion Ledger committee on dropout prevention. He is very active in the teacher association having served as president of the Jackson Association of Educators.  He currently serves on the board of the MS Association of Educators and the National Education Association. Within both organizations, he has served on several more committees. He is currently a part of the Teacher Leadership Initiative that helps to enhance his leadership skills from the classroom.
Darein is a graduate of Provine High School. He has a BA in English from Belhaven University. He has a Master in Education and a Specialist in Educational Leadership from MS College. Darein is  currently in the dissertation phase of completing a doctorate in Education in Leadership at MS College.
Darein was recently appointed to serve on the committee to evaluate and make recommendations to the state educator and administrator evaluation system for the MS Department of Education.

Darein was quoted saying “I love teaching. It is my passion.” He plans to become a school administrator one day. His favorite quote is “Teaching is not what I do. It’s who I am.” Dr. Jill Biden, wife the Vice President Joe Biden.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  John Quincy Adams.

Mage High School is fortunate to have great teachers like Mr. Spann.
