The sniper who shot a dozen Dallas police officers, killing five, is an Army veteran and a “loner” who had no criminal record but a pile of weapons and bomb-making materials in his house, officials said.
Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, left the Army Reserve in 2015, nine months after returning from a deployment to Afghanistan. He was working as an aide for mentally challenged children and adults before Thursday’s mass shooting.
Johnson grew up in Mesquite, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, and graduated from John Horn High School in 2009. He joined the Army Reserve out of school and trained to be a carpentry and masonry specialist after basic training.
According to Johnson’s parents, Micah turned into a hermit
after he was discharged from the United States Army in 2015.
Micah’s mother, Delphine Johnson, explained Micah always dreamed of becoming a police officer growing up, but later became “gung-ho” about joining the military. “He loved his country.” “He wanted to protect his country,” stated Delphine.
Delphine McDonald Johnson grew up in Magee, MS. She as well as Micah’s father, James, have Magee ties.
James explained that he had no idea this act was coming from his son. “I didn’t see it coming. I love my son with all my heart. I hate what he did.” “I don’t know anything to say to make things better,” stated Johnson.
July 7, 2016 was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
