Inmate work force was discussed during the meeting with the Simpson County Board of Supervisors, Thursday, March 15, 2018.
Simpson County has enough inmates to work the needs of the county at this time. Mendenhall, D’Lo and Braxton also use these prisoners when available.
The inmates work on the garbage routes for the county, jail kitchen, clean up within the county, and assist road crews.
MDOC is closing the TVC Correctional Facility located in the City of Magee. (These inmates work on the city garbage truck as well as clean up of city facilities.)
Representatives from Magee previously met with the board asking for help from the county with the loss of the inmate work program.
The program is scheduled to close in May and relocate from Magee to the Delta Regional Correction Facility which is being renovated. (for more information on the renovation click here)
The county advised there were not enough inmates housed at Simpson County to fulfill the needs for the city of Magee.
MDOC contacted the county office and sheriff office stating they could supply an additional 20 prisoners if needed to Simpson County. The board discussed the additional cost the county would incur to house these inmates for Magee’s needs. The board determined that each city Magee, Mendenhall, D’Lo and Braxton would be required to pay a fee to utilize these inmates. A rough estimate of approximately $20 a day per prisoner would be charged to each city for these additional inmates. The $20 does not include money needed for medical expense for inmates, which means cost could run more for each inmate.
If the county accepts the additional twenty prisoners, certain changes will be required at the jail facility to meet Federal codes. (Such as enlarge the recreational area)
The board approved the request for additional inmates noting that the county’s needs would come first in use of inmate labor.
The board agreed to talk with each city officials explaining the approved plan and seek the cities input into their intentions to work with the plan.
In police matters, Sheriff O’Cain requested approval to move Bruce Rosse from part-time detention officer to full-time detention officer.
Ray Reed was reappointed to Region 8 mental health for 4 years term under authority of section 41-19-33 of Mississippi code of 1972.
