Washington, DC – This morning, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) released a statement in response to the news that the Defense Department had conducted an airstrike at the direction of President Donald Trump on Baghdad International Airport to kill the leader of Iran’s Quds Force, General Qassem Soleimani. The Quds Force is the elite arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, a fighting force labeled as a terrorist organization by the White House in April 2019.

“Qassem Soleimani was a terrorist who targeted Americans,” Guest said. “The U.S. will continue to defend our nation and our allies from the evil of terrorism that threatens the world, and I am thankful for President Trump’s strong leadership in this continued battle. Our prayers are with the members of our military and foreign service fighting to protect American lives and preserve freedom everywhere.”

According to a press release from the Department of Defense, the purpose of the strike was to deter future attacks planned by Iran.

Congressman Guest serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and believes that American greatness is rooted not only in our success at home but also in our strength abroad.
