Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Guest voted against S. J. Res. 54: A joint resolution relating to a national emergency declared by the President on February 15, 2019. The bill would terminate the national emergency declaration made by the Trump Administration to divert funds to address the crisis on the southern border.
“I will not support any legislation that denies much-needed resources from our law enforcement agents to stop the flow of drugs into our country,” Guest said. “Over 90 percent of the heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine seized in the United States are manufactured in South America. These drugs are smuggled over our southern border and sold in our communities. The American people deserve a solution to our country’s drug crisis that is catalyzed by our open southern border. I voted against a resolution to terminate the President’s emergency declaration earlier this year and, once again, voted to support the President’s efforts to address the crisis at our southern border.”
Since his election, Congressman Guest has been a strong supporter of intervening to address the crisis on our southern border. Earlier this year, he pinned an op-ed that argued the importance of increased border security in stopping the flow of drugs across our southern border.
Congressman Guest serves on the Committee on Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations. Before his election, he served as a District Attorney in Madison and Rankin Counties where he worked closely with law enforcement agents to address criminal activity, including drug-related crimes.
