Mississippi’s Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities is preparing to recognize its Silver Jubilee, 25 years of advocacy for Mississippians with disabilities.  On August 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Coalition will host a ticketed event at the Marriott Courtyard on Ridgewood Court in Jackson.  The evening will feature a custom menu prepared by the Bistro with music compliments of “The New Bourbon Street Jazz Band.”  Tickets are $50 and will support the Coalition’s work as a statewide cross-disability organization.

The reception will celebrate the joint accomplishments of the Coalition and other organizations, and will honor notable advocate, Christy Gilliland Dunaway.  Dunaway will be honored with the Mark Smith Lifetime Achievement Award, given only once before in 2010.

One in five Mississippians is considered to have some type of long lasting condition or disability.  “The 70’s catch-phrase, ‘temporarily able-bodied,’ was coined to remind us that we are all fragile,” said Pam Dollar, executive director of the Coalition.  “Accidents, illness, and even long life, can move us from being a ‘TAB’ to being a person with a disability.  We are really advocating for all Mississippians.”

The Coalition is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  The ADA was the first large scale initiative the Coalition, as an organization, helped push forward.

Tickets can be purchased on-line at www.msccd.org, or at the door.  “If you enjoy great food and great music, this party is for you and supports a very worthy cause,” said Dollar.  Tickets can also be purchased and donated back to the Coalition for individuals with disabilities who might not otherwise be able to attend.

The Coalition, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit state-wide cross-disability organization comprised of people with disabilities, family members, professionals and advocates. The Coalition works collaboratively to expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for Mississippians with disabilities and empower them to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives.  For more information call 601-969-0601.
