Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, March 1, 2022 for their regular scheduled meeting. Mayor Berry advised there would a forum sponsored by the Chamber concerning the school bond passage, Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the Civic Center in Magee starting at 6:00 p.m. The Chamber is hosting a Members Breakfast Thursday, March 10th at 7:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Family Life Center with Guest Speaker Andy Gipson. The event is free but tickets must be obtained from Chamber Office before event.
Mayor Berry announced the city is on track for the fourth year in a row for record sales tax collection.
A gun ordinance was passed by the board in hopes to deter the recent shooting happening within the city. The board voted unanimously to approved the ordinance. The ordinance will prohibit the discharge of a weapon (gun, pistol, rifle, or any type firearm) within the city limits of Magee. The new ordinance will take effect in the coming weeks.
The Mayor announced Allen Martin as the new Intern Chief of Police approved by the board.
The board accepted the resignation of the following law officers Tuesday night. Chris Jones effective 3/4/22, Mike Grubbs effective 3/4/22, Candance McGill effective 3/8/22, Jamie Burkett effective 3/4/22, Walter Burkett effective 3/4/22, Shawn Cooper effective 3/4/22, Billy Seghini effective 3/4/22, Casey Bowen effective 3/10/22, Cody Blakeney effective 3/4/22, and Paula Harvey effective 2/18/22.
The board approved moving DeAndrew Williams from part-time officer to full-time officer, and Victoria Lawson from part-time dispatcher to full-time dispatcher.
Mayor Dale Berry announced the upcoming retirement of Parks and Recreation Director David Dunn effective in June. The plans are to move Jimmy Zila to Park Director and Daniel Decker in Jimmy’s position. The board hopes to hire an additional employee. Parks and Recreation Department would take over the duties of grass cutting at the YMCA and City Park as well as the Sportsplex. The Marvin Jackson Park is being discussed as possible falling under parks and recreation for upkeep. The Parks and Recreation department would be responsible for the garbage collections at each of these parks.
The board approved to purchase a lawn mover for maintenance at the air port at a cost of $10,832.00. Ashley Steele advised the filters are in at the airport and have been replaced.
The board approved the sale of land near the airport. The approval is pending on review of the attorney all state, municipals and federal laws are covered.
With no further business the meeting was recessed until Monday, March, 14, 2022.
