The Mississippi College football program has been picked to finish 7th in the 2016 Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, it was announced on Wednesday (Aug. 3).

The Choctaws, who open the 2016 season by hosting Point University on September 3rd at 2:00 p.m., racked up 21 points in their return to the poll after over 20 years in Division III.

West Georgia (63 pts) is the preseason favorite to win the GSC for the second straight year after advancing all the way to the NCAA Division II semifinals in 2015. The Wolves took home seven of the nine first-place votes.

North Alabama (53 pts) was picked to finish second, while Florida Tech (48 pts) grabbed the other two first-place votes but sit in 3rd in the preseason poll.

Delta State (46 pts), Valdosta State (40 pts) and West Alabama (26 pts) sit in front of the Choctaws, while first-year program West Florida (16 pts) and Shorter (11 pts) round out the preseason picks.

The preseason all-conference selections were also announced, which includes 28 members, 13 of which were unanimous selections. MC was not eligible to have players selected for the preseason All-GSC team.

Each team had four incoming players named to the 2016 Top Newcomers list. Juniors Steven Bradley(Olive Branch, Miss.) and Kris Reliford (Columbus, Miss.) were joined by freshmen Jamarcus Morrissette (Douglasville, Ga.) and Cavosea’a Stinson (Elba, Ala.) as MC’s representatives. Bradley and Reliford come to MC after winning the NJCAA national championship with Northwest MS CC last season.

Mississippi College is a private Christian university located in Clinton, Mississippi with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. MC is currently in transition to Division II and the Gulf South Conference, optimistically looking toward July when they will find out about clearing the final hurdle of transition and being full members for the 2016-17 academic year.
