Carroll Austin was a hard-working man. He was employed by Roadway Express for more than 30 years. He did not love the job, but he loved his family and did whatever was necessary to provide well for them. Carroll was a farmer at heart and had a special knack for growing watermelons, cantaloupes, and peanuts. After arriving home from a long trip to Dallas or Houston, he stepped out of his truck and into his work clothes to head to the field. He woke every morning with the sun and was ready to retire for the evening when the sun set. His children all agree that the best gift he ever gave them was to teach them how to work. He did not settle for less than their best effort and pushed them to always go a little farther than they thought possible. His word was his bond. He lived that example before his children as well, teaching them to uphold their word no matter the cost. There are countless numbers of people who would also tell of his generosity. Many were the days when someone would come looking for “Mr. Carroll” because they needed a little help. He was always ready to help as long as the other person kept their word in return. Carroll is known far and wide for his love of domino playing. He was an excellent player, even competing on occasion at the national level. He has many friends who will attest to the fact that he did not tolerate playing with someone who did not have much “domino sense”! For the past many years, Carroll has enjoyed going daily to Zip’s Restaurant to drink coffee with his buddies. Each of the people in that group have helped to fill his days with friendship and fellowship. After a long full life, Carroll was ready to meet Jesus leaving behind a legacy that will live on through the lives of his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Howell Austin; father, Vardaman Austin; mother, Nettie Butler Austin; brother, David Austin; sisters, Shirley Fisher, Ann Mills and Pansy Ivy.
He is survived by his sons, Billy Austin (Penny) of Laurel, MS and James Austin of Mize, MS; daughters, Lisa Blackwell (Don) of Mize, MS and Belinda Kirk (Steve) of Fayetteville, NC; sister, Dora Ainsworth (Ray); grandchildren, Shontai Owens (Dustin), Tristan Austin (Kayla), Kaitlyn Montoya (Chris), Alex Kirk (Kansas), Austin Blackwell (Whitney), Seth Kirk and Marissa Sloan (Tyler); 10 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family.
