During the Monday, December 15, 2025, meeting of the Simpson County Board of Supervisors, Chancery Clerk Tim Gray informed supervisors and members of the public that the county rubbish pit is nearing capacity.

To address the situation, the county plans to rent six dumpsters. Two dumpsters will be placed at the rubbish pit, two in Mendenhall, and two in Magee. All dumpsters will be located within fenced city and county barn areas.

Gray emphasized that the placement and use of the dumpsters will not impact regular garbage pickup services for county residents at this time.

The cost of the dumpsters will be $600 per month per unit. This fee includes transportation of the waste to Ellisville for disposal.

Construction is currently underway on a new rubbish pit, which county officials hope will be completed in approximately one year. The project is being managed by Eco South. According to Gray, the county currently has approximately $300,000 allocated in its rubbish account.

Officials noted that the existing rubbish pit will remain open until closure becomes absolutely necessary.

Jessica Gunter of Comcast appeared before the Simpson County Board of Supervisors to provide an update on broadband progress within the county.

Gunter reported that work is underway on laying fiber lines and establishing an emergency contact system. The planned service area will extend from Braxton to Mendenhall, reaching an estimated 2,700 residents.

“When permitting is approved, we will move forward,” Gunter told the board, noting that final approvals are the remaining step before the project advances to the next phase.

County officials expressed appreciation for the update as expanded broadband access continues to be a priority for residents and emergency services across Simpson County.

Road Manager Jeremy Bolton presented a motion to accept the Maintenance Report for the month of November, which was approved. During the meeting, supervisors also approved a promotion for Arby Weathersby, increasing his pay to $16.45 per hour. Officials noted that Weathersby holds a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

Tax Collector Jamie Brewer submitted the real and personal property taxes for November.   A discussion was held regarding Ferguson Enterprise, which is currently showing zero inventory. Ferguson Enterprise is a plumbing and supply business connected with Air South. Officials noted that the company’s tax bill last year was approximately $7,000, based on reported inventory. Jamie Brewer stated she will reach out to the company again and report her findings back to the Board of Supervisors.

John Kilpatrick, Emergency Management Director, reported that the county’s  911 system and mapping system are now fully up and running. Kilpatrick also reminded residents that free smoke alarms are available to county households. Anyone in need of a smoke alarm is encouraged to contact Emergency Management for assistance.
