Recap of City of Magee Board of Aldermen Meeting 10/05/2021
Mayor Dale Berry called to order the October 5, 2021 Board of Aldermen meeting. Alderman Brown led in prayer.
The Mayor reported the LED lights on Highway 49 have been replaced by Entergy. Southern Pine replaced their poles with LED lights several months ago.
Halloween (Trick or Treat) will be held Saturday, October 30, 2021. Children are encouraged to Trick or Treat after dusk and until 9:00 PM.
Libby Hegwood Shivers has been named the Water/Sewage clerk for the city. Mrs. Shivers is replacing Dena Moseley who is retiring by the end of the year.
The celebration for Veterans Day (November 11) will be held at the Civic Center beginning at 11. Following the program, the Magee Fire Department will feed the veterans and their families.
The minutes and agenda were approved.
Alderman Sue Honea gave a report on the Cemetery Committee which is composed of: Joy Harris, Jason Ratcliffe, Tawesia Meador, Gaylord Long, Ricky Anderson, and Jo Anna Barnes. The committee is working with the city to ensure clean up of the cemetery as well as removal of limbs. The committee has voted to name the sections of the cemetery and put up direction signs. The sections will be named alphabetically.
The Mayor reminded citizens that permanent trash cans are not allowed in the city. Regular cans that can be moved from the street to the home should be used. Cans are to be removed from the street as soon as possible following pick up.
The Mayor recognized Brennon McNair who was drafted by the Kansa City Royals. McNair was the only high school player drafted in the early rounds in Mississippi. The Mayor planned to present a key to the city to Brennon at Crazy Day, but he will be leaving before Crazy Day. Brennon’s parents will accept the key at Crazy Day. Brennon’s extended family was present for the recognization.
New hire pay for city workers was increased to $11 per hour. Workers who were hired at $10 will see a pay increase to $11.
Magee High School Homecoming parade will be held October 21st on Main Street. The aldermen gave permission for the parade.
Gray Montgomery from Hattiesburg spoke before the Board about a plan to centralize employees insurance as well as help with the prevention of leakage in the city insurance system. Montgomery is to meet with Clerk Jon Styron, Mayor Dale Berry, David Dunn, Aldermen Matthew Hickman and Mark Grubbs in the future.
Andrew Booth came before the board to explain his desire for a food truck in Magee. Mayor Berry feels strongly that sales tax and property taxes should be taken into account. The board agreed to discuss Food Trucks, Garbage Sales, and Tent sales at a workshop in the near future. Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie informed the board he met with Mr. Booth and the truck will be top notch.
In airport matters, the board voted to sale 2.1 acres near the airport that are of no use to the airport.
Police Chief Chris Jones discussed the noise ordinances. The Mayor and Board informed the Chief to not allow loud outside noises in the city after 10:00 PM. Chief Jones explained that citizens need to call when there is a problem with noise.
Building Inspector Phillip Magee reported that demolition of the Western Sizzlin has begun. Plans are to build a Pizza Hut and Checkers on the property. Phillip will work with the owners of the property to be sure all ordinances are followed. Alderman Sue Honea requested that Phillip double check on the location of the garage dump for the businesses. She is requesting the dumb not be visible to the street. Alderman Lane Steele requested a brick wall to be built around the garage area and that the front not face the highway. Alderman Honea pointed out the lack of foresight with the Dollar General not locating the loading area on the side of the building away from the public. Mr. Magee assured the board he is aware of their feelings and will check closely.
Philip Magee reported that Shane Steele, who is in charge of local clean up, has sent 25 letters to residents about the condition of their property. Almost all citizens responded positively. (If you are concerned about a property in Magee, contact Shane @ 769-229-2707.)
Public Works department head Tim Bray bragged on several of his workers: Clyde Hobbs, Jimmy Padgett, Calvin Williams and Ray Brinson. Tim said these guys “hit the ground working—they go from one job to another without waiting to be told.”
The public works department was able to repair the bridge into Walmart last week saving the city a great deal of money.
Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie discussed the problem of grease traps in restaurants and face food places in Magee. Mr. Valadie is working on a plan to present to the board.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be October 19, 2021 @ 6:00 PM @ City Hall.
