“Books are the Heart of Learning” at Mendenhall Elementary

The Mississippi Department of Education has asked school librarians to weed books that are dated and to get their school libraries up-to-date. Mrs. Crawford has been very busy this year at the Mendenhall Elementary School Library and has weeded around many books/videos that were printed or copyrighted prior to the year 2000, while keeping books essential to the school’s collection. These books that were deleted from the collection were first offered to other educators at Mendenhall Elementary and the Simpson County Achievement Center. A donation was also made to Petal Upper Elementary, which was recently destroyed by a tornado, through the University of Southern Mississippi’s Education Department in Hattiesburg. Mendenhall Elementary then held a “Books are the Heart of Learning” night at the school on Thursday, February 2, 2017. Parents and students were invited to attend and bring a soft tote bag. The students received a goody bag of various reading items, as well as a Simpson County “Read-to-Me” t-shirt. The family was then able to choose a bagful of books/videos to take home and add to their own reading collection. Around 30 families attended the event, and some families that were unable to attend came by the office and choose books Friday during the day.
