CommonCoreJACKSON – Legislation that will lead to the end of Common Core education standards in Mississippi passed the Senate today, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said.
The bill also prohibits the Mississippi Department of Education from using the PARCC assessment in local schools beginning with the 2015-16 academic year. Specifically, the bill says, “the State Board of Education cannot require school districts to administer the multistate PARCC test or any other consortia-developed test.”
“This legislation will end Common Core and allow Mississippians to create strong academic standards that are among the highest in the nation,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said.
Senate Bill 2161 heads to Gov. Phil Bryant for consideration. The bill establishes a task force comprised of educators, parents and subject matter experts to evaluate and create the highest level of standards in the nation for Mississippi.
Included in the bill:
·         Establish the Mississippi Commission for College and Career Readiness.
·         End relationship with Common Core and PARCC.
·         Add protections for student data.

The lines “the State Board of Education cannot require school districts to administer the multistate PARCC test or any other consortia-developed test.” does not mean the bill prohibits the Mississippi Department of Education from using the PARCC assessment in local schools. It simply means that the Mississippi department of education cannot force local schools to have common core standards. And do we honestly believe that mississippi can ever have a really good high school curriculum without common core?? Common core was mississippi’s only chance of catching up with rest of the nation and we blew it.
Just look at magee high school. Every single class is a Joke! Only 2 students from the graduating class went to a university, the rest of the class went to the dead end of a community college. (these assessments are deduced from statistics that show that most Community college students have to repeat their two years again when they go to a university.) At Magee, most of the class are jokes. I am a current Magee high school student, Hence i can testify. All we do in most classes is come in, write a page of bs, turn it in, and get a 100 for a daily grade, and then walk out of the class with an A without learning anything. Almost all high school in mississippi just like magee is way to focused on sports (such as football), And many student don’t try at all in high school because they think they can get a football scholarship. But they don’t realize how hard it is to get a football scholarship.
A better question is Why did we get rid of common core? Well, it was because it was too hard for our students and the students not able to preform well made our state look even worse. So what do they do, they get rid of common core by saying they want to create standards that that HIGHER!!!! Does this even make logical sense? NO
If mississippi wants whats best for their students, then they should reinstall Common core into the classroom!

SB2161 does nothing to end Common Core in Mississippi. And we do not need another commission (stacked with political favorites) that doesn’t even hold any power for change. Governor Bryant has made the statement that he is giving this special consideration, and could even veto it.

I respect MageeNews.com for presenting the press release that was sent out. I hope you will also read the press release sent out today that presents the concerns that SB2161 is not a good bill.

    Thank you.
