On March 27, 2017, The Magee Chamber of Commerce met for their first meeting of the year 2017. The current board consists of 11 out of the 12 possible members that should make up the board. During this meeting, the board had a discussion session as to who they believed needed to fill the 1 seat vacancy. The vacancy on the board was created when Matthew Hickman resigned in order to seek election for Alderman Ward 2. The board agreed and it should be noted that whoever was selected to fill this vacancy is in place to serve out the remainder of Matthew’s term, which is 1 year. Because this person is serving out the remainder of a term for a past member, they would still be eligible for nomination and election by the membership next election for a full 3 year term.
The board discussed several names that were nominated from this past election by the membership. It should also be noted that the Chamber of Commerce by-laws state that the board of directors have full power to fill any and all vacancies created during the year prior to the next election. The board agreed that it was best to pull names for this vacancy from the list of nominations from this past election. The board opened the floor to nominations and then preceded to vote by secret ballot. Brian Barnard was appointed the position as the 12th seat to the Magee Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors by majority vote. Barnard was contacted following the meeting and agreed to accept the position.
