Barbara Mary Beltz Lack passed in her sleep on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Hillcrest Nursing Center in Magee, MS. She was born on October 8, 1920, in Laramie, Wyoming, the daughter of Vera and Warren Beltz, Senior.
1920 was the year women first got the right to vote in the United States, though Progressive Wyoming had the foresight to grant it in 1869.
Barbara had one brother, Warren Beltz, Junior. She adored him and called him Bud. Together as kids they performed tap dances during intermissions at the movie theatre in Laramie. Their family enjoyed the nearby mountains of the Snowy Range and also the Grand Tetons, which she dearly loved.
After attending Laramie High, Barbara went on to the University of Wyoming where she met the love of her life, Wendell Lack, of Mize, Mississippi. He was there on an athletic scholarship until WWII began, at which time he enlisted in the Army Air Corps.
Barbara, a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, went from being a college coed to the wife of a flyboy. She lived most everywhere Wendell was stationed around the world, most notably Guam and England.
An artistic woman who loved to travel, Barbara was also a tireless volunteer during both war and peace time. After Wendell retired from a career in the Air Force they settled in Jackson where she volunteered for many years at the Mississippi Museum of Art and at Fondren Presbyterian Church.
Along with her parents and brother, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Wendell D. Lack and their only child, First Lt. Stephen D. Lack, both U.S. Air Force pilots.
She is survived by sisters-in-law, Jo Lack, Dell Lack, Jean Lack Griffing and her husband Clayton Griffing; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with one hour of visitation from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Mize, MS. Calvary Pastor Joey McLeod and Fondren Pastor Nash Noble will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Calvary Presbyterian Church Cemetery Association or the Magee General Hospital Foundation.
Barbara’s family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Charles Pruitt and to Hillcrest Nursing Center for their care and kindness.
Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
Barbara, who collected angels, was considered by many to be one herself.
