JACKSON, Miss. – Today State Auditor Shad White announced that Special Agents from his office have arrested Richard Creel, former Jones County Beat 4 Road Foreman, and Tommie Landrum, contractor, for allegedly embezzling property belonging to the Jones County Board of Supervisors.

Creel and Landrum allegedly engaged in a scheme to embezzle county-owned culverts and transport the property to a predetermined location provided by Landrum. Creel also allegedly attempted to have witnesses provide false information to agents in an effort to hinder the investigation. Creel also allegedly embezzled fuel from Jones County and converted it to his own personal use.

“The dedicated team at the State Auditor’s Office work tirelessly to uncover schemes like this one,” said State Auditor Shad White. “We will continue to work closely with prosecutors to make sure that those who steal taxpayer money are held accountable.”

“My office appreciates the work and detailed effort put in on this matter by the Auditor and his staff,” said District Attorney Brad Thompson. “As the District Attorney for Jones County, I will continue to vigorously prosecute this case and protect our taxpayers’ money.”

Creel faces up to $15,000 in fines and 40 years in prison while Landrum faces up to $6,000 in fines and 25 years in prison. All persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
