Angel Unaware
My childhood heroes were Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. One of my best Christmas gifts was a set of Roy Rogers guns and the cowboy suit to go with it!! I felt like I could conquer the world as I put on my cowboy boots, my Roy Rogers hat, and Roy Rogers guns! Bad guys and birds were not safe, as I loaded those guns with caps and shot anything that crossed my path on the road to Aunt Janie’s house! I never got Trigger, but I substituted with a really good stick horse!
Good memories from childhood of two good people that had their share of heartache. The book “Angel Unaware” was one of the first that I read as a child. The title is from the Bible and is appropriate for the story Dale tells of their joy, grief, sadness, and inspiration. Robin Rogers was born with Down’s Syndrome. At her birth, they were advised to put her in an institution and hide her away, as was common in the 40’s and 50’s. They bucked the conventional wisdom and took her home to their blended family. Robin lived a brief 2 years, filled with surgeries, and hospitalizations, and died of complications from mumps. Her brief life impacted the Rogers and inspired them to adopt special needs children and worked to positively impact others throughout their life.
Be aware this Christmas season of the opportunity to entertain these angels. God sends opportunities to us but we must be open to grabbing the opportunity, and by doing so, we receive the blessings!
Hebrews 13:2: “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
