Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, September 7, 2021 for their regular scheduled meeting.
A public hearing concerning the city’s 2021-22 budget took place from 6:00-6:30. Several citizens were in attendance.
Aldermen Honea, Grubbs, Brown, & Steele were in attendance. Alderman Matthew Hickman was unable to attend.
Mayor Dale Berry advised the public the scheduled board meeting for September is Tuesday, September 14, 2021. The city budget will be voted on at this time. No meeting will be held on September 21, 2021 (regular time.)
Citizen James Reece appeared before the Board during public comments with concerns of 18 wheelers parking on city streets. The city has an ordnance that prohibits the parking of 18 wheelers on city streets. Mayor Berry informed Police Chief Chris Jones to warn truck divers and then began writing tickets.
Dena Mosley is retiring from the City. An application for the vacated position is available at City Hall.
Plans for street paving will begin soon. Bart Ballard with Guest Engineering met before the board and asked each alderman to consider what roads needed asphalted. Ballard also reported the finding on the bridge between the high school and the old elementary school on 5th Avenue. The sidewalks on the bridge can be repaired. The cement has eroded causing unsafe passage. The projected is expected to cost approximately $50,000. Bids will be taken.
Mayor Berry reported the city is a step closer with the CBC grant. A site visit was conducted last week. The grant, dealing with water and sewage, is looking promising.
The Board approved making the interception of 2nd Street and 7th Ave a four way stop. The stop signs will be installed in the coming days.
Kiffer with Barge reported they are awaiting a code and software to install for the card reader at the airport. As soon as the items are received, the fuel pumps will be back in operation. The airport electrical grant which the city is applying for is a 100% grant.
The cost for the a turn key at the animal shelter will now cost $50.00 during the normal operating hours and $100.00 after hours. The shelter operates 6-2 Monday – Friday.
The board approved the alcohol ordinance set by the state. The hours of beer sales will be 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. and liquor 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. alcohol signs in restaurants can be visible to the outside.
The fire department was awarded a FEMA grant for $49,047.62 city will contribute 5 %. The grant will be used for a Breathing Air System. The city’s cost is $4787.98 for a $51,500 system. The board approved to use the lowest bid from KATS for the purchase of the system. Fireman Michael Allan secured the grant for the Fire Department.
The following HR report was presented by Police Chief Chris Jones.
- Move Joel Blair from full-time to part-time officer
- Move Angie Fortenberry from full-time to part-time dispatcher
- Hire Candace McGill as a full-time dispatcher
The Health Department has sent a questioner concerning the security of the water inside the city. Charlie Validie is working to complete questioner as quickly as possible. MEMA has requested the city to approve an updated flood plain ordinance. The city will need to name a flood plain manager. The information will be gather and discussed at a later meeting.
With no further business the meeting was recessed until Tuesday, September 14, 2021 meeting. The City of Magee 2021-22 budget will be voted on at the meeting.
