Around 7 o’clock Thursday morning, July 9, 2020, an 18 wheeler ran off the road and hit a culvert spilling Disel fuel onto the highway and near the drainage ditch, according to Fireman Michael Allan. The accident was at highway 49 intersection near McDonald’s.
The Magee Police and Fire Department were called to the scene. The fireman put “Oil Gator” on the highway, which is made to absorb oil and gas spills, to prevent any Disel fuel entering the city culverts.
(OIL GATOR is produced from recycled, chemically modified cellulosic fibers. It contains all the necessary ingredients (nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorous) to enhance biodegradation of hydrocarbons by indigenous bacteria. Absorbs up to six times its weight in oil or oil based products.)
DEQ was called to the scene to assist with clean up and check to be sure everything was done correctly.
The activity on the highway lasted for several hours.
Sue note: Anytime you deal with DEQ, you are going to be on scene for quite awhile.
