The Simpson County School Board met Thursday, August 7, 2020 for a special called meeting to discuss the hiring of 7 new employees.
Five Positions will be created with funds from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSERF). The funding provided will allow the district to hire four additional nurses for the middle schools and high schools for 2 years on a one-year contract to assist with students who have symptoms of COVID19, manage the sick room, and to assist with contact tracing if needed. The nurses will also be available to assist with the day-to-day medications and the usual sickness that occurs in a “normal” school year.
The funding would also allow the school district to hire a Director of COVID19 to serve as the district’s COVID-19 official, oversee all COVID19 related concerns and processes, and implements district wide systems and protocols for COVID-19 concerns as well as other infectious diseases and health concerns. The director will also assist school nurses and schools with medical concerns and crisis.
The district will receive funding from the Equity in Distance Learning funds to purchase Chromebooks for all students in grades K-12. Due to the increase of technology in our school district, there is a great need for additional computer technicians to assist with downloading information to the computers for students to use off campus. The funding from ESSERF will allow the district to hire two level 3 computer technicians to assist with the new demand in technology assistance.
The funds will allow the district to hire two computer technicians for the IT department.
The board approved the new positions.
Superintendent Greg Paes gave the board a copy of the new updated calendar (Attached below). This is the most updated version. The calendar is subject to future changes as adjustments are required due to unforeseen shuts downs, weather days or change in MDE requirements for attendance.
The board was made aware the Beginning of School had been delayed a week. The new start date is Monday, August 17, 2020. No approval from the Board was needed due to previous board approval for the Superintendent to make adjustments as needed.
With no further business meeting was recessed until Thursday, August 13, 2020 for their regular schedule meeting.
