The Magee Trojans hit the road Friday night and brought home a hard-fought win, shutting out the Mt. Olive Pirates 16–0 under the glow of Friday night lights.

The first half wasn’t easy. “We struggled to get into any rhythm,” Head Coach Chase Courtney admitted. “We have a lot of young and inexperienced guys. We only had four returning starters coming into the season, and we’ve had more injuries than I’ve experienced at any point in my career.”

Despite those obstacles, Magee found its footing.  Senior leader Braedon Gregory carried the load on offense, guiding the Trojans down the field and setting the tone with his experience and determination. On defense, Connor Pittman made a big statement with an interception, sparking momentum and keeping Mt. Olive off the scoreboard.  Touchdown was scored by Traven Magee.  Brady Fairchild added 3pts for a field goal.

The defense as a whole was dominant, delivering a complete-game shutout. “Mt. Olive’s coaches have done a tremendous job in making them a totally different team in just a year,” the coach noted, giving credit to the Pirates’ progress.

But perhaps the biggest story of the season so far has been injuries. Magee played with just three returning starters Friday night. “We’ve just had a really bizarre start to the year as far as injuries,” the coach said.

The list is long:

  • One returning starter sidelined with a dislocated kneecap.

  • His brother suffered a dislocated kneecap along with ACL, MCL, and PCL tears.

  • A starting wide receiver went down with a broken fibula.

  • A starting offensive lineman is out with a torn meniscus.

  • A linebacker battling a strained abdominal wall.

  • A starting end with a sprained ankle.

  • A running back with a bruised chest.

“It’s just been a weird start to the year,” the coach admitted. “This team didn’t need injuries — and we’ve had more than our share.”

Still, the Trojans showed heart on the road. With younger players stepping up and seniors leading by example, Magee overcame the adversity and proved they can win even when the odds are stacked against them.

Final score: Magee Trojans 16, Mt. Olive Pirates 0.
