A Simpson County native has achieved a major academic milestone while building an impressive career in education and leadership.
Dr. Shirrell Black Hinton, daughter of Shirlinda Robertson and the late Derrell Robertson, Sr., recently earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, adding to an already distinguished list of academic and professional accomplishments.
A graduate of Simpson County Schools, Dr. Hinton attended Simpson Central School for grades four through eight before graduating from Mendenhall High School in 2007.
She went on to attend Jackson State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education. Her passion for educational advocacy and supporting student success led her to continue her studies at William Carey University, where she earned a Master’s degree, an Educational Specialist degree, Psychometrist certification, and ultimately her doctorate in Educational Leadership.
Dr. Hinton now resides in Gulfport with her husband and children and serves in the Biloxi Public School District as an Academic and Behavior Strategist, as well as Special Education Department Chair. Her work focuses on supporting students, guiding educators, and helping strengthen special education services.
Beyond her school district responsibilities, Dr. Hinton remains actively involved in professional and community organizations. She currently serves as president of the Mississippi Division for Emotional and Behavioral Health (DEBH), a division of the Council for Exceptional Children, where she advocates for students and educators across Mississippi.
She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (Upsilon Chi Omega) and the Junior Auxiliary of Gulfport, continuing a commitment to service, leadership, and community involvement.
Dr. Hinton’s journey from Simpson County classrooms to state-level educational leadership stands as an inspiring example of achievement through dedication, education, and perseverance. Her accomplishments bring pride to her hometown and serve as encouragement to young students with dreams of making a difference.
