MENDENHALL — A powerful message about responsibility and decision-making was delivered to local students through a joint effort between the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services and the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The program, titled “Please Return on Monday,” focused on encouraging students to make safe choices during prom season. The event featured a realistic mock accident held in the Mendenhall High School student parking lot, giving students a firsthand look at the potential consequences of impaired or reckless driving.
Dabika Mayfield, Trooper First Class and Public Affairs Officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, participated in the program, reinforcing the importance of highway safety and awareness among young drivers.
The keynote speaker, Dwight Owens, shared his personal story of a life-changing accident that left him confined to a wheelchair. His testimony brought a sobering and emotional perspective to the program, emphasizing how quickly one decision can alter the course of a life.
“Please return on Monday in the same condition you left,” Owens told students. “Your choices today impact your tomorrow. Make good choices.”
The demonstration and presentations aimed to leave a lasting impression on students ahead of prom festivities, reminding them that safety should always come first.
School officials and organizers hope the program will encourage students to think carefully about their actions and prioritize making responsible decisions during one of the most memorable times of their high school experience.
