A new Mississippi law aimed at reducing gun violence and strengthening penalties for firearm-related crimes will take effect July 1, 2026.

Governor Tate Reeves recently signed Senate Bill 2710 into law, creating tougher consequences for violent crimes involving firearms, increasing penalties for the possession and sale of stolen firearms, and establishing stricter punishments for individuals who fire into crowds.

Under the new legislation, juveniles under the age of 18 who commit violent crimes with a firearm will no longer automatically be handled through Youth Court. Instead, those offenders will be prosecuted in Circuit Court as adults unless a judge specifically orders otherwise. The law applies to violent offenses, attempted violent offenses involving a deadly weapon, and additional crimes committed during the same incident.

Officials say the measure represents a major shift in how Mississippi handles juvenile gun violence.

“As your Chancery Clerk, one of the heaviest responsibilities I oversee is Youth Court,” said Scott County Chancery Clerk Tony McGee in a message to families. “We see so many kids getting in and out of trouble who need help, and we always try to correct and rehabilitate them. But parents need to understand that the rules are about to change.”

The law also creates enhanced penalties for individuals who possess, transfer, or sell stolen firearms. If a stolen firearm is later used in a violent crime, the person responsible for selling or transferring that weapon could face prison sentences ranging from 10 to 40 years.

Another provision targets shootings involving crowds. Anyone who willfully fires a gun into a gathering of two or more people can now be charged with a felony punishable by five to 15 years in prison, fines of up to $10,000, or both, regardless of whether anyone is injured.

Local officials are encouraging parents throughout Simpson County and across Mississippi to discuss the new law with their children and emphasize the seriousness of firearm-related offenses.

“The days of treating armed violence as youthful misconduct are over,” McGee said. “If your child makes the wrong choice, the safety net of Youth Court may be gone.”

Officials hope the legislation will serve as both a deterrent and a wake-up call for young people and their families. They stress that a single decision involving a firearm can carry life-altering consequences, including adult criminal convictions and lengthy prison sentences.

Community leaders are urging parents to teach accountability, responsibility, and respect for the law before a child becomes involved in the criminal justice system.

“The most important conversation you have with your child today may determine whether they walk across a graduation stage or stand before an adult judge in a courtroom tomorrow,” McGee said.

Senate Bill 2710 becomes effective statewide on July 1, 2026.
