MDOT’s “Road to Game Day” enters the postseason

JACKSON, MISS. – Hey, batter, batter! Our Mississippi teams start postseason play today, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants to remind fans about the “Road to Game Day: College Baseball” to get you to first pitch safely and on time.

“The end of May is always an exciting time in Mississippi with NCAA Baseball Regionals. As two of our cities playing host this year, you can expect an influx of traffic across the state. We want to make sure that every fan makes it to and from the game safely,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “Avoid distractions, slow down in work zones and call a designated driver if you need one. These are simple things we can all do to keep our loved ones and ourselves safe while on the way to root for our teams.”

Whether you are staying in-state to cheer on the Bulldogs in Starkville or the Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg or traversing to Lincoln, Neb. to cheer on the Rebels, you need the ultimate game plan. For the best route and to avoid congestion on a game day road trip, drivers can download the free MDOT Traffic App. It gives users real-time access to tools that show road conditions and traffic alerts. The alerts are interactive, providing users with more information at their fingertips. Drivers can also access this travel information by visiting MDOTtraffic.com.

MDOT’s “Road to Game Day: College Baseball” is about more than traveling to and from the game with no foul balls. MDOT’s main goal is to keep drivers and passengers safe in vehicles and roadside workers safe along highways. With more traffic on game weekends, it’s important to use extra caution and drive smart.

Here are some tips to stay safe behind the wheel and keep work crews safe in the field:

  • You’re out! Never drink and drive; call a designated driver.
  • Save the peanuts and cracker jacks for the game. Avoid distractions like food when you are behind the wheel.
  • High speeds are great for pitching, but not for driving! Slow down and drive the speed limit.
  • Secure your load. Flying debris can hit harder than a line drive.
  • Use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
  • Make sure to buckle your seat belt and wear it correctly.
