Dora Shumaker Gardner, age 85, passed away on April 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of deeply rooted faith, unconditional love, and devoted service to her family.
Dora was a faithful minister’s wife and the beloved partner of Rev. Joe C. Gardner, Jr., with whom she shared 65 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on their love for God, their family, and their church community.
She was a devoted and loving mother to her four children – Curt Gardner (Kim Gardner), Clint Gardner (Holly Gardner), Bethany Gatewood (Doug Gatewood), and Charity Mackenzie – whom she cherished deeply and supported wholeheartedly throughout her life. She was also the proud grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy and most treasured accomplishment.
She leaves behind two precious sisters – Alice Joyce and Donna Windberg (Tom Windberg), and her baby brother, Dale Shumaker (Linda Shumaker). She was preceded in death by her parents Leta Shumaker and Henry Shumaker and her brother, Henry Shumaker, Jr.
Dora was a woman of strong and unwavering faith. She captured her relationship with Jesus through her writings, Mrs. G’s Corner and Deer Crossings. In the Fall of 2019, she was published in Our South magazine, which remained a highlight for years to come. Her writing – which encouraged others by sharing God’s word with wisdom, grace, and compassion – will be her living testimony.
Dora’s legacy of love and devotion will live on through her family and all those whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
